Lloyd's Op-Eds

The Weekender - April 5

The Weekender bids so long for awhile

This thirty-third in The Weekender series is not the last, but will mark a hiatus in its appearance in the Courier.

During the last 15 months, The Weekender has tried to convey some things about the sensibility of an increasingly large and important segment of the greater Chatham citizenry. We are people who live here only part of the time, but want to do more than merely escape from the city, recreate and buy lots of stuff. We want to fully participate in and contribute to a place that has become for most a second and for some their primary home.

The column has at times reported very local news stories from Chatham or Manhattan from the perspective of someone living in two worlds. At other times, I have reported events and trends occurring in Australia, France, Egypt, England and on the state and national political scene, but always with the objective of connecting them to Chatham and Manhattan. If I have not always succeeded, I hope at least it has been a good read.

For the next period of time you will be able to find this author in various ways and places. In the last few months The Weekender has run in the Courier, I have also had longer opinion pieces in the New York Times and three very recently in Sunday editions of the Albany Times Union. I expect this to continue. You will also see me in online news outlets. And all of these, The Weekender columns, the long op-eds and the future reports I have promised (or threatened) will be woven into my third book likely to be published in 2013. A recent amazing and quintessential New York City experience that I’ve encountered will be part of that book. But, of course, that story is for another day.

So long for awhile in these pages and thanks to the Courier and to my dear readers.
